It was great to have Martin Lewis with us at Park Hall this week. The chaplain at Cardiff Blues, a professional rugby union club, Martin is also the Wales director of Sports Chaplaincy UK (SCUK).
Founded in 1990 and known originally as SCORE – which reflected its initial football-focus – the charity then branched out to cover a wide range of sports. From athletics to horse racing, rugby to cricket, the world of sport is now covered by a number of active chaplains.
Working across the four home nations within the UK, SCUK is endorsed officially and individually by the likes of Sir Alex Ferguson – with quotes from the ex-Manchester United manager appearing in publications.
In addition, the work of the organisation is officially recognised by the following in the world of football: English Football League (EFL), English Premier League (EPL), Northern Ireland Football League (NIFL), Professional Footballers Association (PFA), Rugby Football League (RFL), Scottish Football Association (SFA), SPFL (Scottish Professional Football League) and the Vanarama National League.
As you can see, the organisation and its work is highly respected. Back to the visit of Martin to Park Hall though, he was with us to meet with Stewart Bloor, who as well as being the Media & Communications Officer at the club is also the chaplain.
Stewart – and The New Saints – had already been recognised by SCUK but we now take the commitment to a new level.
“I’ve been ‘attached’ to SCUK for a short time but without any involvement. I’m thrilled to be moving on to the next level and especially so with the club’s blessing.
Ian Williams’ support has been incredibly positive and I’m thrilled that we have a Chief Operating Officer who recognises the important service – often behind-the-scenes – that chaplaincy offers to a professional football club.” Stewart commented.
